CALL

In this entry, I will explain a bit about CALL. So, please bear with me :))))

What is CALL?

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is an approach to language teaching and learning in which the computer is used as an aid to the presentation, reinforcement and assessment of material to be learned, usually including a substantial interactive element.

What are the types of CALL Programmes:

  • CALL-specific software
  • Web based learning material
  • Generic software
  • Computer-mediated communication (CMC) programs
What are the progressions of CALL?
  1. Behaviouristic CALL
  2. Communicative CALL
  3. Integrative CALL

Next, I am going to explain about Behaviourist Approach as well as Communicative Approach. So, what are they?? Fret not, I'll explain to you one by one.

Behaviourist approach is based on the idea that learners respond to stimuli in their environment.  The role of the learning facilitator, therefore, is to provide relevant and useful stimuli so that the learner responds to and gains the required knowledge or experience. The behaviourist approach centres around the belief that appropriate behaviour can be taught through constant repetition of a task combined with feedback from the facilitator. See the image below for further explanation...

Meanwhile, Communicative approach is based on the idea that learning language successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning. When learners are involved in real communication, their natural strategies for language acquisition will be used, and this will allow them to learn to use the language. In other words, Communicative approach emphasizes on the interaction as both means and ultimate goals of learning a language.

Computers play a vital role in every field. So, here are a few roles of computer in Communicative Approach:

1) The Computer as a Tutor (computer gives guidance but does not judge or evaluate students)

2) The Computer as a Stimulus (computer stimulates students' discussions, writing & critical thinking)

3) The Computer as a Tool (computer involves the use of generic software as tools for language learning)

That's all for now. I'll bring up another topic for my next entry... Thank you!
